Amsterdam Hotel Piet Hein – any feedback?

Question:

Has anyone stayed at Hotel Piet Hein in the past year or so?  Any feedback about its rooms, particularly the ‘annex’ doubles/twins for around $120, or just whatever you experienced would be appreciated.

Response:

I have never stayed at this hotel but visited it some years ago. It is a privately owned hotel overlooking VondelPark. It is close to the famous Leidseplein and the upscale shopping street "PC Hooftstraat". The hotel is well kept and I think you can go there without hesitation. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Has anyone stayed at Hotel Piet Hein in the past year or so?  Any feedback about its rooms, particularly the ‘annex’ doubles/twins for around $120, or just whatever you experienced would be appreciated.

Response:

Thank you for your response.  We stayed at AMS Holland this past October, which was acceptable enough, but our shower stall had a moldy ceiling and I think I got sick later in my trip from that.  The Piet Hein’s website makes it look pristine, and the price is a bit higher than was Hollands, just hoping it will be worth it. Anyone else have an experience there..?

Response:

I know this hotel very well, having stayed there around 30 times in the past 5-10 years.  Its a nice friendly, family run place.  Rooms are kind of small (usual in Amsterdam), but very clean and tidy, manager and staff are very friendly and considerate They’ve recently been rennovated I can recommend it whole heartedly John Stolz

Recomendations for Amsterdam Hotel/Transportation ?

Question:

Hello, I am planning to visit Amsterdam for about 5-6 days next month and was wondering if anyone could recommend a reasonably priced hotel (~USD $100) in a convenient part of town for tourists. I’ve never been to Amsterdam before, so I am wondering if most things to see are within walking distance of the city center?  Any ideas or tips for getting around and lodging are greatly appreciated. Thank you very much! Dave

Convenient for what, the museum area, the canal ring, the red-light district?

Dave, A friend of mine has recently opened a B&B in Haarlem. It’s a little out of the way but transportation is easy, and the price is a steal. More info at http://www.enjoy-europe.com/b&bpaula.htm John —    * * * Mastering Independent Budget Travel * * *              http://www.enjoy-europe.com/

Everything is basically walkable. I’ve used the trams within the central area maybe 10 times in over 30 years. There’s just no point. If you’re going farther out within the city, they can be useful, but that’s more likely because you’re visiting someone in a residential area. Even then, it’s more pleasant and fun to bike, and you can rent bikes all over the place (train stations are the easiest for this and often about the best deal). Between cities, the trains are very useful. miguel — Hit The Road! Photos and tales from around the world: http://travel.u.nu New mini photo-feature: Life in DC: http://travel.u.nu/dc/

Is that a single or double room?  Very easy to do $100 or less for a single room; getting tougher to do $100 for doubles in Amsterdam, although you can come close, like $110 or so. I’ve never been to Amsterdam before, so I am wondering if most things to see are within walking distance of the city center?

Very much so, and Amsterdam is very walkable.  It’s a fairly compact city.  Any ideas or tips for getting around

Primary means include your feet, the trams, and the buses, and perhaps the occasional taxi if you feel the need. and lodging are greatly appreciated.

For a single room, there are plenty of smaller two-star hotels that should suit your needs.  However, be aware that it isn’t absolutely necessary to stay in Amsterdam to enjoy it.  You could easily take a hotel room in nearby Haarlem; then it’s just a matter of taking a 20-minute train ride to Amsterdam.  I’ve stayed in several hotels in the city that were worthwhile, including De Lantaerne, Asterisk, Best Western Terdam, and the Wiechmann.  Do note, though, that the Wiechmann is closed for remodelling from the 16th of December until sometime in January. — Nobody You Know

Dave, Since we spend a lot of time in Barcelona, we’re renting out our nice and comfortable apartment in Amsterdam for short stays. It is located between Heineken brewery and the famous daily Albert Cuyp market, close to museum quarter, Vondelpark, Leidseplein, river Amstel, in a neighbourhood with dozens of nice restaurants, trendy bars and shops. All the above within 5-10 minutes walking distance. Central station is a bit further (about 17 minutes) Good tram connection from and to the apartment. Untill februari 2003 the rental price is 85 euro per night for two persons. We charge a one time cleaning fee of 30 euro. Amsterdam Hotels: Anyone familiar with AMS Cordial Hotel?

Question:

Hello , I stayed at that hotel 2-3 years ago (before it was taken over by AMS) so this information may be a bit outdated : On the positive side :         Centrally situated , you can walk to most Amsterdam              attractions              RLD/Central Station 5 minutes              Dam Square 1-2 minutes                  Major museums 20 minutes                Shops (including a supermarket) 1-2 minutes         Cheap         Clean (if a bit small) rooms         Breakfast is included , not better or worse than other hotels         There is an elevator (not common in budget hotels in               Amsterdam) On the negative side :         A bit  rundown , common areas (not the rooms) need to be              painted         Rokin is a very noisy street         No A/C         Furniture in rooms is a bit flimsy  (think IKEA)         It’s actually a 2-star hotel , that’s what the sign in front                said If you decide to book it : get a room with a WC/shower , I would not recommand the shared bathrooms/toilets . Frankly if you are a woman travelling alone or someone not used to Amsterdam I’d go elsewhere , it’s an OK hotel but you could do better . Personnaly I would not stay there again , I like the RHO or Avenue better (the Barbizon Palace [5 stars] is also very nice but can only afford it once in a blue moon) . Response:

This hotel has been taken over last year by the AMS group, a local Amsterdam hotel group with 8 other hotels.  I have never been inside but suppose it meets the standard of a 3 star hotel. Rokin is a very centrally located street. The hotel is just 200 meters off Dam square and an ideal point for visiting the center. All major attractions are with walking distance. Even the Rijksmuseum and the van Gogh museum can be reached if you are not afraid to walk 15-20 minutes. However, major transportation (streetcars) stop nearly in front of the hotel. Canal cruises are at 100 meters. The Kalverstraat, a major shopping street passes behind the hotel. So if anyone can assure you on the quality of the hotel (which I can not, not having visited it) go for it as far as location is concerned. Enjoy your visit Rene R.F. I was able to get a 5 star hotel from Priceline, 5 minutes from the central station in October for $80 per night (listed at $300 per night on their website).  You may want to try that.  If $80 is too much, you can try for a 3 star. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi: Travelling to Amsterdam in September, and got a pretty good deal on the AMS Cordial Hotel on Rokin Street.  The location seems pretty central to everything.  I’ve been looking around trying to get some reviews of the place, but can’t seem to find anything.  Anybody out there familiar with the place and can give an impartial evaluation with regards to things like security, cleanliness, facilities, ambiance, etc? I think the real secret to obtaining an Amsterdam hotel is to phone those hotels that don’t have an e-mail or fax # listing and better yet the hotels that are not represented by on line booking agencies or the best- hotels that return no hits when searching for them using google.com The first URL above is good for finding those gems. Hi, last trip I rented a cheap car in amsterdam and did a little loop through the Netherlands, germany, belgium, and northern france…and back to amsterdam…coming back into a’dam I tried hotels all the way from the belgian border north… no rooms… hotels calling ahead for people and finding… no rooms. I finally just head into town to my regular ** hotel at wetering schaans and check to see if the multi-lingual FULL sign is in the window…it’s not…I park on the street…ring the bell…park in the garage behind the heineken museum ($$)…. they book most of their rooms through the VVV… so call the VVV for a room. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – is there any reason why Amsterdam hotels should be booked out

Amsterdam Restaurant Question

Question:

I think when you’re in Amsterdamn, great Indonesian food is a must-try. The infamous "rice table". My absolute favorite is Kanjil and Der Tiger, on Spuistraat. Comfortable place, fabulous food. Go. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I ate ribs at a killer Mexican resturant in the Leidseplein area when I was there. Cant remember the name though, sorry. Seek and destroy! Hi, Check out the Amsterdam travelogue on our web site and read about the best place for ribs! Regards, Don and Linda http://www.thetravelzine.com TheTravelzine.com is non-commercial With only time for 1 lunch and 1 dinner in Amsterdam, does anyone have a suggestion for places to go? Some place memorable for it’s cuisine or location is what I’m after. Non Tobacco would be great, but don’t know how restaurants in Holland are with that. Thanks!

Response:

The Dutch smoke in restaurants. If you find that unacceptable, the go to Mickd’s and take carry out to the park. When I travel I find things to be often different and I try to enjoy the differences and tolerate the sameness. Omaha has a lot of the type of restaurants you are looking for. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – With only time for 1 lunch and 1 dinner in Amsterdam, does anyone have a suggestion for places to go? Minority rights should be respected in a democratic society. Having said that however, my daughter is also a mild asthma sufferer and ALWAYS looks for non-smoking provision in restaurants. There is no reason why the needs of both communities cannot be accommodated. However, this must be enforced by statute. Enforcement in France is virtually non-existant, despite the legal requirement to provide non-smoking areas.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Dear Giny, Sorry that I still have to disappoint you but we do not have a non-smoking area.  It is very hard to have such an area if you want to have a financial viable operation.  Either you make the whole restaurant smoke-free and market it like this or you keep it like it is.  If you have parties requesting tables for 4-5 persons there are always people who wnat to smoke. I must admit that I hate smoking and smoke disturbs me a lot.  Your remark is a good occasion to re-discuss the matter with my operational team. I am afraid however that we shall not meet very soon. Regards Rene Wildeman Rene, Thank you for your kind answer. I have asthma (I hope that is the correct word in English), so for me being in a restaurant or nice cafe is often NOT nice. I hope we get smoke-free places soon in our country. Sjoerd, I am not intolerant towards smokers, but sometimes I think smokers should have one day asthma or be allergic for smoke and they will understand why we want smoke-free places. Besides, why do you actually mention the word "tolerant". I think I could use the same word toward smokersa little tolerant towards non-smokers….. Why do you have to smoke in a restaurant? You can do it after your meal on the street or at home???? Now I have to stay outside a cafe or restaurant, it would be so nice if smokers would think more often a little about people who suffer from their habit.! Giny

Go for dinner to my RESTAURANT DE ROODE LEEUW at Damrak 93-94 for dinner but make a reservation for we are nearly always full. We have been awarded for our Dutch regional specialties and are rated No 1 for Dutch cuisine in Iens Restaurant Guide. The restaurant is moderately priced and has a decor dating back to 1911 with wooden panels and wood carvings hanging from the ceiling. If you are disappointed I shall reimburse you. It is one of the few establishments which is still in hands of the same owners since it was built in 1911 on its present location. So far I have been unsuccessful in getting a table the first time I went  (without reservation) so now I always make sure I go one or two days before the end of my vacation and book.   I have always been successful in booking for the following evening. I found the atmosphere very cosy and the staff particularly friendly and attentive.    There is no way I would  miss this when I go back to Amsterdam.

If you can’t get a table try the Tujuh Maret right next door (also Indonesian).  I had dinner there last Friday and it was a terrific meal at a pretty reasonable price.  The staff was attentive and friendly, and it is even cosier (smaller) than the Tempoe Doeloe.  KV

Because you are in a small minority. About 35% of Dutch people smoke, and 60% are tolerant towards smokers and don’t care if there is a little smoke around. Have you ever been to California? The bars and discos are very sterile, and don’t have the nice atmosphere which you can find in a bar in Amsterdam or Paris. On average, we may live two weeks shorter than someone who lives in a smoke-free environment, but we have much more fun! :-) Sjoerd

Regards Rene Wildeman

Rene, Thank you for your kind answer. Giny

Response:

Minority rights should be respected in a democratic society. Having said that however, my daughter is also a mild asthma sufferer and ALWAYS looks for non-smoking provision in restaurants. There is no reason why the needs of both communities cannot be accommodated. However, this must be enforced by statute. Enforcement in France is virtually non-existant, despite the legal requirement to provide non-smoking areas.

Question:

I just received an email from the Canal House saying the rates I was quoted were correct.  The new rates are so much higher, I’ll keep looking for other hotels. Jim – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Re:  Canal House rate difference between web site and hotel itself, posted by Jim Sanchez: According to the hotel receipts that I have, in  February, 1998, for a double, we paid  255 nlg and in April,1999, 275 nlg. The 1999 rate was 290 nlg, but we were given a 5% discount  for paying cash.  I am sorry but I don’t remember what the rates of conversion were  in those years, so I can’t convert the guilders into US dollars.               I have just e-mailed the hotel asking for rates and availability in September, for the same two rooms that we stayed in.  I also asked if they still gave the discount for cash.   I will let you know if they quote me rates other than what they quoted you. I hope that the new owners (1999) have kept their promise to ‘keep things the same’, as this hotel is really is a little jewel.  Maybe they haven’t updated their site in awhile…but what they quoted you, vs their site rate, also has me wondering. I just saw a fantastic deal being offerred thru travelocity. The Radisson SAS (5*) is offerring a special rate on rooms for 2 persons for $121/night. I thought this hotel was ok, but I would only consider it 4* (compared to other 5* hotels in A-dam).

But it says $121 per person for a two-person room, so it’s still a bit pricey.

The rooms are beautiful and the hotel is immaculate.  The staff is very friendly and helpful.  Good location.  The front rooms overlook the canal, and the rear rooms, the small yard. The American owners sold it to an English or Irish couple, I can’t remember which,  who had been coming there for many years.  The new owners have kept everything the same.  Some friends stayed there again in 2000, and verified this. Hi, Chris! I enjoy the Hotel Wilhelmina at Koninginnewe 167-169. It’s a two-star that is very near Vondelpark and can be reached from Centraal Station using either tram 2 or tram 16 (Get off at the Valeriusplein stop). Not real fancy, but not expensive either. An added plus is the multiligual Dutch concierge (This guy even speaks Arabic fluently!) He was great fun to sit in the lobby and drink beer and watch soccer matches with! I’ll be attending a conference in Amsterdam in mid-July and would appreciate your hotel recommendations.  (I’m currently checking the usual sources, but first-hand knowledge is always preferred!) The conference is at the RAI conference center, but I don’t necessarily want to stay near there.  A hotel in a decent district near transit to the RAI would be fine.  As far as price goes, as usual, cheaper is better.   I’d also appreciate interesting restaurant recommendations.   Thanks. Amsterdam hotel – Seven Bridges, 717

Question:

Could anyone who has stayed at either one of these hotels please give me some information, please — size and comfort of rooms, etc.  Thanks.

Response:

I have stayed at Seven Bridges twice in the past 18 months.  Once was in the summer, and the other time in the winter.  The hotel is very nice for a small hotel, and I would probably stay there again (but not first choice).  It does not have A/C, which can be uncomfortable in the summer when it is hot (yes Amsterdam does get hot in summer), and the heating did not work real well in the winter.  Opening the window in the summer was not a good idea due to street noise. Since the hotel is a converted canal house, it can be a little noisy due to guests in other rooms who were obviously having more fun than I was having.  Breakfast is served in the room, and is generous with coffee, cheese, meats and bread. I stayed in 2 different rooms, and they were both decent size by American standards, but closet space was sorely lacking.  I saw in several rooms that were being cleaned, and one on the first or second floor at the rear looked really nice.  I think it had a door or large window out onto the garden.  It has narrow winding stairs which could be a problem for older people or those with physical limitations.  It has no restaurant or bar, but there are plenty within walking distance. Both times were for business trips, and I recall thinking that I would bring my wife here some time, so I must have liked the place. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Could anyone who has stayed at either one of these hotels please give me some information, please — size and comfort of rooms, etc.  Thanks.

Stayed there a couple of months ago and loved it. The rooms that we stayed in was charming and a peek in the others looked equaly original. Stairs are steep and there is a bit of creaking but I would thoughrally reccomend it even for its location. email me if you want a scan from a guide book. Not on the web but Jack has a description. Hotel Seven Bridges, Reguliersgracht 31 tel 6231329 Trams 16, 24 and 25. Near the Rembrandtsplein more precisely between Keizersgracht and Herengracht. It’s one the preferred address of all those who know about Amsterdam hotels. It mixes charm and reasonable prices. A houses of three stories, in brick, looks on a cute small canal and is not very frequented so, you will have your rest. Ring at the door and a jovial man will open you among flower bouquets. The first impression is very sympathetic. The rest as you interpret it yourself. The owners have a great knowledge about furnishing. They go and buy their furniture at Sothebys!! The result are very personalized rooms in a classic or modern style. No.5; Empire style, is magnificent, a dream for weekend honeymooners. But not very cheap of course, but what the hell, a little folly from time to time, why not?…..The rooms on the 3rd floor, mansardees, impeccable and less expensive are exquisitely decorated. I advise no. 9 for the young couples, no. 10 for the solitary walkers and no. 7 at second floor with its three windows looking out on the canal. What is your budget? Hotels in Amsterdam usually give discounts during the week but are more expensive on weekends. Good alternative is B&B for a clean inexpensive double room in the city centre. Please email me for more info:

"Cheap" and the "centre of Amsterdam" are often at odds with each other. Might try Hotel Damrak, five min walk from the train station. Relatively cheap, not terribly clean. There’s also the Hotel de Roode Leuw (spelling?? Means red light in Dutch) further on down Damrak–nicer, cleaner, but more expensive (used to be a Best Western, not sure if it is now). The one I use is the Crowne Plaza, close to the station, clean, but fairly pricey. Might not be so bad in November. At the top of the price chart are hotels like the Barbizon Palace in the same area, but I don’t recommend it–found the rooms hot and the staff cold (to the point of disdain and supreme unhelpfulness) A truly cool book: The World Is Already Yours Conscious living in the real world www.alreadyyours.com (sample chapter, etc…)

Btw, it’s "De Rode Leeuw" and it means Red Lion. What you call centre is all near the central station and Red Light District! Amsterdam has much nicer areas, also in centre of Amsterdam, Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein. Museums Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum are also there.

Response:

I stayed a few years ago, in the Euphemia Hotel, which has a very slow-loading website at http://www.euphemiahotel.com/ It was, if I remember correctly, five stops on the tram from Centraal Station. I found it OK – not fancy, but reasonably priced, within walking distance of the Rijksmuseum. I enjoyed my stay there. The same Google search which gave the above address threw up several other refeences to the hotle, so you may be able to find more recent reports on its facilities. Alan Harrison

Red Lion, eh? That’s interesting, I was told it means red light, You have been taken by the nose, as we say in Dutch….. De Rode Leeuw is indeed The Red Lion. The Red Light would be Het Rode Licht, as far as I know there is no hotel with that name in Amsterdam.

Would be a fun name though :-) . Maybe we should open a business in Amsterdam? :-)

I LOVE the Van Onna!!! Mr. Van Onna is very friendly and the rooms, albiet sparse, are clean and quiet! My Single was only $35.00 a night. And, I loved the fact that the hotel was not in the tacky touristy section of Amsterdam!
