Is this going to cause trouble?
Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I take it the problem is crossing French air space? Would SR be kind enough to switch you to some other airline, AMS-LHR-Montreal? I’m assuming that AMS-LHR doesn’t go over French air space, but that may be wrong. Good luck! No AMS-LHR involves only Dutch and English airspace. A great circle route AMS-ZRH only crosses Alsace-Lorraine so it wouldn’t be much of a diversion. ZRH-YUL crosses Northern France and the tip of England, but again taking a more northerly track shouldn’t add more than half an hour or so. The problem may be getting slots since everybody else will be trying to go around as well. Actually, the real problem may turn out to be that flights from Europe to North America will quickly get full with all the people rebooked on flights from other places.
Especially since they seem to have all been fully booked without the strike!
Response:
Hi folks I think there’s no big trouble. Called Swissair and they don’t see problems. And videotext now says there could be problems only for flights from AMS to/from France. Well, at least a relaxed weekend to come and going to pack some extra books to read in ‘unexpected’ delay
cheers Joachim

Response:
Which is precisely why I suggested AMS-LHR.
Indeed. Heaven knows I’m the last one who should be pointing out circuitous routings, but SR via ZRH better be a whole lot cheaper than KL direct or BA through LHR. B.

Good luck! – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Just it’s announced on dutch teletext there are no flights from and to amsterdam next monday because of french staff on strike. I have to travel to Canada via Switserland monday. What to do? 1. just relax and go to Schiphol to see what’s happening? (it’s an early morning departure so I have a room at Ibis airport hotel). Follow up question: what happens if delay causes me to miss my connecting flight in Zurich? Both are with SR. 2. call Swissair and ask them if it’s better to go by train to Zurich (wouldn’t help probably as flights zurich-montreal are crossing France too
3. ask for a change to a flight on sunday if possible. I gues i’ll just go for option 1
I mean it’s not a real desaster if I will fly on tuesday but it means – losing one already paid hotelnight in Montreal (is there any party going to reimburse this? SR, the french) – starting an important conference quite jet-lagged Maybe they put all the monday passengers on tuesday in business and first class
Cheers Joachim

I would hope that airlines not needing to touch french ground would simply fly around france instead of over it due to the strike. From switzerland, it should be fairly easy to fly south of france, or north of it (north probably shorter due to great circle).

Of course you should phone them and see what’s the situation! They might put you on a completely different flight and route. (BTW, I understand that this is an ATC strike, why would trains be affected? And to Switzerland, you can travel through Germany, avoiding France altogether. I mean it’s not a real desaster if I will fly on tuesday but it means – losing one already paid hotelnight in Montreal (is there any party going to reimburse this? If you know in advance what your changed plans are, you should be able to change your hotel reservation, no big deal. Otherwise, no, I can’t see the airline reimbursing that. Especially since it’s not their fault. The credit card that you paid the ticket with might provide some kind of insurance. Maybe they put all the monday passengers on tuesday in business and first class
Right. Make the whole plane first class
