Is this going to cause trouble?

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I take it the problem is crossing French air space? Would SR be kind enough to switch you to some other airline, AMS-LHR-Montreal? I’m assuming that AMS-LHR doesn’t go over French air space, but that may be wrong. Good luck! No AMS-LHR involves only Dutch and English airspace. A great circle route AMS-ZRH only crosses Alsace-Lorraine so it wouldn’t be much of a diversion. ZRH-YUL crosses Northern France and the tip of England, but again taking a more northerly track shouldn’t add more than half an hour or so. The problem may be getting slots since everybody else will be trying to go around as well. Actually, the real problem may turn out to be that flights from Europe to North America will quickly get full with all the people rebooked on flights from other places.

Especially since they seem to have all been fully booked without the strike!

Response:

Hi folks I think there’s no big trouble. Called Swissair and they don’t see problems. And videotext now says there could be problems only for flights from AMS to/from France. Well, at least a relaxed weekend to come and going to pack some extra books to read in ‘unexpected’ delay :-) cheers Joachim

Response:

Which is precisely why I suggested AMS-LHR. :-)

Indeed. Heaven knows I’m the last one who should be pointing out circuitous routings, but SR via ZRH better be a whole lot cheaper than KL direct or BA through LHR. B.

I have to travel to Canada via Switserland monday. What to do? 1. just relax and go to Schiphol to see what’s happening? (it’s an early morning departure so I have a room at Ibis airport hotel). Follow up question: what happens if delay causes me to miss my connecting flight in Zurich? Both are with SR. 2. call Swissair and ask them if it’s better to go by train to Zurich (wouldn’t help probably as flights zurich-montreal are crossing France too :-) 3. ask for a change to a flight on sunday if possible. I gues i’ll just go for option 1 :-) I mean it’s not a real desaster if I will fly on tuesday but it means – losing one already paid hotelnight in Montreal (is there any party going to reimburse this? SR, the french) – starting an important conference quite jet-lagged Maybe they put all the monday passengers on tuesday in business and first class :-) Cheers Joachim

I would hope that airlines not needing to touch french ground would simply fly around france instead of over it due to the strike. From switzerland, it should be fairly easy to fly south of france, or north of it (north probably shorter due to great  circle).

Of course you should phone them and see what’s the situation! They might put you on a completely different flight and route.  (BTW, I understand that this is an ATC strike, why would trains be affected? And to Switzerland, you can travel through Germany, avoiding France altogether. I mean it’s not a real desaster if I will fly on tuesday but it means – losing one already paid hotelnight in Montreal (is there any party going to reimburse this? If you know in advance what your changed plans are, you should be able to change your hotel reservation, no big deal. Otherwise, no, I can’t see the airline reimbursing that.  Especially since it’s not their fault.   The credit card that you paid the ticket with might provide some kind of insurance. Maybe they put all the monday passengers on tuesday in business and first class :-)

Right.   Make the whole plane first class :-) . Luc

will be in amsterdam for 5 hours connecting…

Question:

After 12 hours on an airplane, the main thing I’d want is to be outdoors for a while.  Do any of the coffee shops have outdoor seating areas?

Yes, I think there are some. You can also buy your "stuff" in a coffeeshop, take it with you and smoke in a park. Sjoerd

Of course, you do want to remember to get back in time for that next flight!  {%)

io forgot, does the lounge offer only drinks, or do they have snack foods at all there?

Well, with 5 hours unless it is extremely early or late in the day you have plenty of time to get into town, have a real meal, take a canal boat tour, do a bit of sight seeing, and pick up a quick snack to take on your outbound flight. i’ll be there for 5 hours [after 12 hours of traveling. ] Any relaxing simple suggestions? [21 sept 99] If I had five hours to relax in Amsterdam…the first place (and probably only place) I’d hit would be a coffee house. If you’ve been on a plane for a while, it can be a nice relief.

I appreciate the good comments everyone. Here in usa it is not always so simple to go into town from the airports, unless you are at Baltimore international .. a great ride intown, quick and easy. Take a train into the city, and just walk around the canals for a while or site at an outdoor cafe, maybe around Leidseplein.  Maybe take a canal boat ride.  Don’t try to do any museums or indoor tourist attractions. Just soak up the atmosphere of this great city. It is probably the Ogden lounge. Nothing special, but OK for 5 hours I guess. Or you can rent a room in the airport hotel, which is between terminal 2 and terminal 3 airside. Or ofcourse 5 hours is enough to go into town. Trains depart from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central Station every 15 minutes. Cost is fl. 6,50 for a single, trip takes 20 minutes. Sjoerd

Suggestions on AMS-airport area hotel.

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Any suggestions on an airport hotel at AMS, inexpensive, but with some decent food, service, and clean rooms, that also would have non-smoking rooms available. Many thanks! Maryanne. –There is a Hotel Mercure in the transit area, the Sheraton is linked to the terminal and the Hilton is close by, but those two are not cheap of course. Off airport hotels with free shuttle bus are Ibis, Mercure, Bastion, Golden Tulip, Dorint, Holiday Inn. These are all just off the airport, some in the nearby town of Hoofdorp. There is a pay shuttle service to Hotel Schiphol A4, situated at the services on the A4 motorway near the airport. I would think the Ibis, Bastion, and Schiphol A4 would be the cheapest. I have stayed in Ibis (French chain) and Bastion (Dutch chain) hotels in other locations, they are clean, friendly, and reasonably priced, but functional, basic and the rooms are small, especially Ibis. Telephone numbers supplied on request. You might find some info at the Schiphol website www.Schiphol.nl –==++AJC++==–

Rome/Zurich trip

Question:

My wife and I got a deal on airfare we could not pass up to go to Europe this winter.  We decided to fly into Rome and out of Zurich.  We have a huge layover in Amsterdam comming in that has me somewhat concerned.  We cannot get into Rome until after 22:00 (10:00pm), and by the time we get luggage and pass through customs I’m sure it will be at least 23:00. Can we exchange money that late (I’m sure not, but you never know…)?  What is the best way to get from the airport to a hotel at that time of night (bus, train, taxi, or…)?  Do any hotels have a shuttle service?  For that matter, we have yet to book accomodations…anyone care to recomend a place?  Is there an airport hotel so if worst come worst we can just plop there for a night?  If it matters, we will be ariving on Feb. 27 (a Thursday). Thanks!

I’m pretty sure (but not certain) that there is someplace to exchange money. Certainly there are cash machines in operation both at International Arrivals luggage area and alongside the post office (to the right as you exit). If the trains (either to Termini or to Trastever-Ostiense-Tiburtina) are not running when you get out, then there is a bus that goes to Termini Station. A few chain hotels (Holiday Inn, Sheraton, Hilton?) run shuttles, but you’d have to check on the hours. About the closest hotel to the airport is the Holiday Inn Parco dei Medici, but it is no place to stay for long. At any rate, there is no reason not to book whatever hotel in central Roma that you like–just tell them you will be arriving very late and guarantee the room with a credit card (get written confirmation, of course). If you take a cab, expect to spend L.80-90.000 with the night supplement. Howard M. Isaacs Editor The Italian Traveler
